Binggou Danxia Geopark is a photographer’s paradise. Sculpted by the forces of nature over millions of years, the now phallic shaped rocks cover an area of 40km in the middle of China’s Gansu Province. Combined with China’s ever famous Rainbow Mountains the two separate parks together form Zhangye Danxia National Geopark, one of the most unique national parks in the world. The land composition of compact sand and mudstone combined with millions of years of natural erosion created the brilliant red and white layers of rock and vivid sculptures seen today. The land composition of compact sand and mudstone combined with millions of years of natural erosion created what is now called a Danxia landscape. Danxia landforms are completely unique to China. The mountainous regions are characterized by brilliant red and white layers of rock and vivid sculptures that are most striking in the areas outside of Zhangye.

A day trip from the city of Zhangye is all it takes to experience the brilliance that is the thousands of spires and sculptures that make up this incredible danxia geopark. While the park is famous for its nature made creations of the Louvre and a gigantic stone camel, it’s the seemingly endless rock columns surrounded by the huge snow covered Qilian mountains that really steal the show.

You really do have to see Binggou to appreciate all its unique awesomeness.

Greetings from a camel at the park entrance.

First views of the incredible Danxia formations.

Coming around the bend the spires cling to the cliff face, holding on to the mountains from which they were formed.

There are no shortage of steps at Binggou Danxia, but the views are definitely worth the climb.

The columns in this section become more isolated with super distinct colorful layers.

Incredible panoramic views abound from the lookouts at the top of the steps.

Off roading through a dried out river bed. A sign will tell you not to go too far back here, but in reality, there were many people walking through the valley.

A window to the world. The most unique column in the park.

Walking through the riverbed. Unfortunately, the path does not make a loop, but still makes a nice out and back walk.

The rock columns in most of the park hang on to the cliff face. The mountains would look deceivingly ordinary from above.

Remember to turn around as you walk up the paths. Don’t want to miss a view!

How incredibly phallic and impressive are these mountain views.

The most colorful column in the park!

No shortage of steps at Binggou. But man, those views!

The Lourve. Transported all the way from France, of course.

Binggou’s panoramic views are some of the most unique in the world.

Here the Danxia approaches the snowy Qilian range.

Hello Mr. Camel.
binggou-danxia
Old pathways still remain on the ridgeline. They don’t really do anywhere though.

The views from the top of our last climb. An incredible day of walking for sure!

Headed back to the bus. Sad to leave these incredible views.
